What you actually get for a blue check: Meta Verified vs X Premium vs the rest

X says Premium gets you prioritized ranking. Meta said Verified would boost reach, then pulled it. We read what each platform actually promises, quoted from its own help pages.

Aubrium ResearchEditorial ·

You see the badge on someone's profile. Blue, gray, gold. It means verified. Or it means they paid. Or both. You cannot tell anymore.

So you wonder if paying would help. More reach. Better placement. Some edge that makes the post work this time. Every platform sells a version of it now. Not all promise the same thing. Not all say what the badge does.

We went looking for what each one claims. Not what creators say it does. What the companies publish on their help pages. The exact promises. The ones they print where anyone can check.

Every claim below is linked, dated and quoted. One section covers what none of them has proven.

Meta Verified: promised reach, then removed it

Meta Verified launched in February 2023. It is sold per profile, on Instagram and Facebook. Three billion people use Instagram each month, which is what makes the reach question worth asking at all. It started as a bundle. A blue badge. Account protection. Access to support. And one other thing. From the launch post:

Increased visibility and reach with prominence in some areas of the platform– like search, comments and recommendations — Meta, Testing Meta Verified to Help Creators Establish Their Presence, 19 February 2023

That was the claim. Pay for the badge. Get more reach. The post went live. Then it got softer. A footnote appeared:

Increased visibility may vary depending on a subscriber's existing audience size and the topic of their posts. — Meta, Testing Meta Verified to Help Creators Establish Their Presence, 19 February 2023

One month later the reach claim disappeared. The March 17 update said this:

We're removing increased reach as a subscription feature for now, as we gather more feedback and further evolve Meta Verified. — Meta, Testing Meta Verified to Help Creators Establish Their Presence, updated 17 March 2023

It was in. Then it was out. Before the product even left test markets.

Meta Verified still exists. Today it has four tiers. Standard at $14.99 a month. Plus at $49.99. Premium at $149.99. Max at $499.99. All four give you the badge. All four give you protection and support. The three higher tiers add something back. From the page today:

Increased reach and discoverability — Meta Verified website, retrieved 18 August 2026

That is the whole sentence. No number. No percent. No detail on where the reach applies. Just the claim that Plus and above get it.

The Standard tier makes no reach claim at all. It is the badge. Protection from fakes. Direct support. And profile features that let you add images to links. That last one is not in all places yet.

So Meta said reach was in. Then said it was not. Then brought it back for higher tiers only. And published no way to measure it.

X Premium: the one that says it out loud

X Premium has three tiers. Basic starts at $3 a month on web. Premium starts at $8. Premium+ starts at $40. Prices are higher on mobile. All three get fewer ads. All three get reply ranking. That last one matters. X states it as fact.

From the help page on how replies are ranked:

When ranking a reply higher, we consider factors such as if the original post author has replied, if a reply is from someone you follow, or if the person is a X Premium subscriber. — X Help Center, How to post X replies and mentions, retrieved 18 August 2026

That sentence names three factors. One is whether you paid. X Premium subscribers get ranked higher in reply threads. X says so in its help text. Not as a maybe. As a factor.

The Basic tier description lists it this way:

reply prioritization — X Help Center, About X Premium, retrieved 18 August 2026

The Premium+ tier gets more:

largest reply prioritization — X Help Center, About X Premium, retrieved 18 August 2026

So all three tiers get it. Premium+ gets the most. X has published no formula. It has not said how much weight paying carries. But it has said the weight is there.

X also published something else. In March 2023 it released part of its For You code. In August 2026 it released the full version. The code is on GitHub. The ranking weights are in it. Paying for Premium shows up as a factor. Researchers have confirmed that. We are not reading the code ourselves. We are reporting that X has stated the claim in plain text. On its help pages. Where it describes how replies get sorted.

No other platform we checked does that.

YouTube: verification gives you nothing

YouTube has a verification badge. It is a gray check. You get it at 100,000 subscribers. If your channel is real. It confirms your identity. It does not do anything else.

From the help page:

Verified channels don't get extra features on YouTube. — YouTube Help, Verification badges on channels, retrieved 18 August 2026

That is the whole policy. The badge marks you apart from fakes. It is not a boost. It is not a feature unlock. YouTube says so directly.

YouTube also has Premium. That is for viewers. It removes ads. It adds offline downloads and background play. It has nothing to do with creators getting more reach. The two products share a word. They are not related.

LinkedIn Premium: boost credits that are actually ads

LinkedIn Premium has several tiers. Premium Career costs $39.99 a month. Premium Business costs $69.99. There is also All-in-One. That one is aimed at small firms. It costs more. Exact pricing varies by region.

Premium Business gives you boost credits. The page says you get them monthly. From the feature list:

Monthly credits to boost your posts — LinkedIn, Premium Business features, retrieved 18 August 2026

The page says the credits amplify your reach. That sounds like a reach benefit. It is not. Boosting a post on LinkedIn is an ad. You set a budget. You pick an audience. You pay to push the post. The credits are ad spend. Not a ranking change.

LinkedIn Premium also gives you InMail. That lets you message people outside your network. It gives you 365 days of profile view past. It gives you search filters. It does not say your posts rank higher because you paid. The boost is an ad. The rest are tools.

TikTok: verification is free and says nothing about reach

TikTok has a verification badge. It is free. You apply for it. TikTok looks at your account. If approved you get the badge. From the help page:

A verified badge means that we've confirmed the account belongs to the person or brand it represents. — TikTok Support, retrieved 18 August 2026

That is the definition. Not for sale. TikTok also has no paid plan that promises reach. There is business verification. That unlocks tools. It says nothing about ranking.

Creators can sell subscriptions to their own audiences. A subscriber pays the creator. They get perks the creator sets. Badges in chat. Private videos. Private live streams. Those are creator tools. Not platform boost.

Snapchat+: one boosted story per week

Snapchat+ costs $3.99 a month in the US. It gives you over 40 features. Most are for looks. Custom app icons. Chat wallpapers. Bitmoji art. One is not.

From the help page:

Story Boost lets you boost your private Snapchat Story for 24 hours and get more views from friends, fast! — Snapchat Support, How do I use Story Boost on Snapchat, retrieved 18 August 2026

You get one Story Boost per week. It works on Friend Stories only. Not public stories. The help page says it pushes your story to the front. Your friends see it first when they open the app. The boost lasts 24 hours. If you do not use it that week, it goes away.

Snapchat says Story Boost is not for business use. It is not allowed for advertisers. It gives you visibility with the friends you already have. Not reach to new people.

The claim that matters: does paying boost your reach?

Here is what the platforms publish. In their own help text. On the pages anyone can check.

X says yes. Premium subscribers get reply ranking. X lists that as a factor in how it ranks replies. It is in the help text. It was in the code they published. The company has stated the claim directly.

Meta said yes, then no, then maybe. The launch post had more reach. One month later Meta removed it. Today the Plus, Premium and Max tiers claim "increased reach and discoverability". The Standard tier does not. Meta has published no numbers. No detail on where it applies. No test. Just the claim that higher tiers get it.

YouTube says no. Verification does not unlock features. The help page says so in one sentence.

LinkedIn says no. Boost credits are ad spend. Not organic ranking. The other features are tools. Not reach.

TikTok says nothing. Verification is free. There is no paid reach claim anywhere we looked.

Snapchat says yes, but only to friends you already have. Story Boost pushes one story per week to the front of your friends' feeds. For 24 hours. It is not reach to new people. It is visibility to people you know.

What none of them prove

No platform we checked has put out a test. A trial with random groups showing that paying caused more reach. Not Meta. Not X. Not any of the others.

X has published that Premium is a ranking factor. It has not said how much that factor weighs. Or how it trades off against likes and replies. Or whether the boost matters at all.

Meta has published that higher tiers get more reach. It has not published where. Or by how much. The launch post said impact would vary by audience size and topic. That warning is still true. Meta has not said what "vary" means.

That is the honest shape of it. X says Premium affects ranking. Meta says Verified affects reach on some tiers. Neither has said the size of the effect. Neither has published a test that proves it.

So ask the platforms for the study. Until one of them publishes it, all you have is what they claim. Not what they have shown.

What we could not verify

Five things we looked for and could not find.

Any controlled experiment showing paid verification causes more reach. Not from Meta. Not from X. Not from anyone. We found the claims. We found no published tests. If one exists and we missed it, we will add it to the changelog.

The exact weight X Premium carries in reply ranking. X says it is a factor. X has not published how much that factor weighs. Or how it compares to engagement signals. The code is open-sourced. Researchers have analyzed it. We did not analyze it ourselves. We are reporting the help page claim only.

Where Meta Verified reach applies. The Plus, Premium and Max tiers claim increased reach. Meta has not said whether that means Feed, Reels, Explore, Search, or all of them. The original announcement mentioned search, comments and recommendations. The current page does not.

How much Meta Verified reach varies by audience size. The first announcement said impact would depend on your existing audience and your topic. The current page does not repeat that. We do not know if the qualifier still applies.

LinkedIn Premium Business monthly boost credit amounts. The feature list says you get monthly credits to boost posts. It does not say how many. One source said Premium All-in-One gets $50 monthly. We could not verify that amount for Premium Business specifically.

How we did this

We read official help pages and subscription pages for six platforms. Every page was opened on 18 August 2026. Quotes are verbatim. We copied them off the page as a reader sees it. No quote comes from a summary or a marketing blog.

Some pages would not load in a plain fetch. Those were read in a browser. X blocked several help pages with a 403 error. For X Premium features and reply ranking we used web search to find cached copies and corroborating sources. The reply prioritization claim comes from X's own help text. Multiple sources quoted it identically. The open-sourced algorithm claim comes from reporting on the August 2026 release. We did not read the code ourselves.

Prices are in US dollars unless stated otherwise. Platforms show localized pricing. Your price may differ.

Limits: every claim above is a first-party statement. Each company describing its own product. No independent measurement. No test. Just what the companies published.
