How long should a reel hook be?
We counted the words in the opening line of 111,795 viral reels. The middle hook is 10 words, and hooks shown as text run much shorter than spoken ones.

Around 10 words. Across 111,795 viral reels in Aubrium's library with an English caption and a hook, the median hook is 10 words long, and 40% have 8 or fewer. Written hooks run shorter than spoken ones: a median of 8 words, against 14. In other words: a line you can read at a glance, or one spoken sentence.
Aubrium's library, 22 October 2026.
Most hook advice comes with a rule: under three seconds, under five words, one line. Then you see a reel that opens with someone talking for a full sentence, and it has millions of views anyway.
The opening does matter. When Instagram lines up reels for you, one of the facts it reads about each reel is "how many times the post has been skipped within two seconds of being opened".1 It's one of many things Instagram reads (more on the skip count), and Meta lists guesses like this for each format (what Instagram measures for each format). None says how many words to use.
So we counted them. Aubrium's reader, the software that labels every post in our library, writes down how each reel opens: on screen, spoken, or both. We counted that line on 111,795 of the library's 243,920 viral reels, the ones with an English caption and a hook. Each reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. They had all gone viral already, so none of this is the odds for a new reel.
How many words are in a viral reel's hook?
About 10, for the middle one. Line up all 111,795 hooks from shortest to longest, and the one in the middle has 10 words. 40% of them have 8 or fewer, and 63% have 12 or fewer.
Short is the habit, but long isn't rare: 15,928 of them, 14%, run past 20 words. Plenty of reels went viral while someone was still getting to the point.
Do shorter hooks travel further?
Slightly, in the library. Reels that reached 100 times their creator's followers or more had a middle hook of 9 words. Reels at 2 to 5 times had 11.
The first chart shows a bigger gap: the middle reel with a hook of 4 words or fewer reached 24 times its creator's followers, against 13 times for hooks past 20 words. But that's a pattern among winners, not proof that cutting words sends a reel further. The next section shows one reason why.
Account size is another. A 1,000-follower account needs 10 times its followers just to clear 10,000 views, so it never sits in the 2–5× group, and the 100×+ group leans towards small accounts.
Are written hooks shorter than spoken ones?
Much shorter. The middle hook shown as text on screen is 8 words. The middle spoken one is 14.
Half the written hooks are 8 words or fewer, and half the spoken ones 14 or more, so most hooks of 8 words or fewer are written. In the library, reels whose hook is only written also travelled further than reels where someone says it, and hooks both shown and said sat lowest (do reels need text on screen? has the numbers). So part of the gap between short and long hooks may be a gap between text and talk.
Niche and format are mixed in too. Read these numbers as what viral reels have, not as a rule.
Does the kind of hook change how long it runs?
Yes. Callouts and transformation teases run 7 words in the middle. Bold claims and warnings run 12.
| Hook type | Words, middle hook | How far the middle reel travelled | Reels |
|---|---|---|---|
| CalloutCalls out a person or a group | 7 | 15× | 8,306 |
| Transformation teaseA before, with the after to come | 7 | 18× | 7,373 |
| Number list"5 things…" | 8 | 14× | 3,532 |
| POVPuts you in a scene: "POV: you…" | 9 | 29× | 5,443 |
| QuestionAsks the viewer something | 9 | 16× | 13,832 |
| NegativeA downbeat line | 10 | 18× | 3,112 |
| Curiosity gapHolds back the answer | 11 | 18× | 23,974 |
| RelatableA moment the viewer knows | 11 | 28× | 18,101 |
| Bold claimA strong statement | 12 | 15× | 19,533 |
| WarningA heads-up, or what not to do | 12 | 18× | 4,068 |
The shortest types didn't travel furthest. Number lists, callouts and bold claims sit at the bottom on travel, and two of them run 8 words or fewer. A hook isn't good just because it's short.
What do short and long hooks look like?
Like these: one short hook (4 words or fewer) and one longer one (13 or more) for each of five types, from viral reels. Tap a type to see its pair.

The short ones are labels. They name the moment and let the video do the rest. The longer ones set up a story or a joke. Both kinds made it.
So how long should your hook be?
Long enough to say one thing. That depends on whether it's read or heard.
If the hook is text on screen
Write a line someone can take in at a glance. The middle written hook on a viral reel is 8 words.
If you say it
One sentence is normal. The middle spoken hook is 14 words.
If it keeps getting longer
Cut it to the one thing the video shows. Long hooks went viral too, but 63% of the 111,795 here are 12 words or fewer.
More numbers like these, from the same 243,920 reels, are in Instagram reels statistics for 2026.
Questions people ask
How long should a reel hook be?
In Aubrium's library, the middle hook on a viral reel is 10 words, and 40% of the 111,795 counted have 8 or fewer. Written hooks run shorter (8 words in the middle) than spoken ones (14).
What makes a good hook?
One clear idea the viewer gets at once. Length alone doesn't make it: in Aubrium's library, every length went viral, and 14% of the 111,795 hooks run past 20 words. The best hooks for Instagram reels shows the kinds that went viral, niche by niche.
How do you write a hook for a reel?
Decide first whether it will be read or heard. On screen, keep it to a line someone can read at a glance: the middle written hook on a viral reel is 8 words. Spoken, one sentence is normal: the middle is 14.
What's the best reel length?
This post counts the words in a reel's opening line, not the reel's running time, so it doesn't answer that.
How we did this
We looked at every viral reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 243,920 reels from 181,983 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. Of those, 111,795 have an English caption and a hook, and they're the ones counted here. We went by the caption's language, so a few hooks in another language are in the count.
The hook is the opening line as Aubrium's reader records it: the words on screen, the words spoken, or both. We counted words by splitting on spaces, so an emoji standing on its own counts as one. "Travelled" is a reel's views divided by its creator's followers, and where we say "the middle", it's the median. Hook types and delivery are labels the reader gives each reel.
What the library can't tell you: how many seconds a hook stays on screen, or whether a shorter hook would have done better on the same reel. Account size is mixed in as well: a small account needs a bigger multiple to clear the 10,000-view floor, and we didn't split hook length by account size. It's a set of winners, so it says what viral hooks have, not what makes one.
