The best hooks for foundation makeup reels, from 600+ that went viral
We read the opening line of every viral foundation makeup reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 15 real ones to learn from.

Five words, half a dare: "Do it w no cuts". It sat on a foundation tutorial that pulled 10.5 million views for a creator with 11,456 followers. The caption owns up to a #MakeupFail.
Base makeup is fiddly: shade matching, creasing, cakey patches, a concealer that turns grey. The hooks lean right into that. We pulled the first line off 600+ viral foundation makeup reels in Aubrium's library, posted by 400+ creators, and grouped them by kind and reach. Start with the cross-niche guide to the best hooks for Instagram reels for the big picture; our list of every niche has the others.
Curiosity gaps open 21% of viral foundation makeup reels, more than any other kind, then questions at 14%. Relatable lines travelled further, 22 times their account's followers for the middle one, against 13 for curiosity gaps; POV hooks reached 26, but from just 17 reels. 74% show the hook as text on screen, and a typical one runs 10 words.

How long should a foundation makeup hook be?
Not too short. Base hooks of 1 to 4 words got their middle reel to just 9× its follower count, while the 9 to 12 and 13 to 20 word bands reached 15× and 16×.
The 5 to 8 word band sat at 12×, and past 20 words it fell to 10×. A typical foundation hook is 10 words, and 41% run 8 words or fewer. Plenty of these hooks name the problem first: which shade, which spray, why it creases.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it. Three in four viral foundation makeup reels, 74%, carry the hook on screen, and silent text went furthest.
Silent text took the middle reel to 19× its follower count. Saying the line while it sits on screen got 12×, and a voice alone 11×. Talking is common here: 46% of these reels have someone speaking to camera, and 19% open on a voice alone, with another 27% saying the line while it's on screen. The written line still went further.
How do viral foundation makeup hooks start?
"This" and "if" lead, on 25 and 24 hooks. "This" points at a product or a technique; "if" names a problem the viewer has. "I" and "let's" follow at 13 and 11.
