The short answer

Going by Aubrium's library, small accounts' viral reels look much like bigger accounts'. Of its 243,920 viral reels, 44% came from accounts under 10,000 followers, and 17,386 of those passed a million views. Their faces, text, sound and hooks sit within four points of reels from accounts with 50,000 to 100,000 followers. The library can't say what made them go.

Ask how a small account goes viral and you'll hear two stories. One says reach goes to accounts that already have it. The other says there's a trick for small accounts, and you just haven't found it yet.

Instagram tells it differently. It says every reel is shown to followers and non-followers alike. With non-followers, it starts with a small group, and the reels that do best go on to wider and wider groups. Instagram says this is "designed to level the playing field".1 It's the same for every account: every new post starts cold, with no history of its own.

So we checked who's behind the reels that made it: all 243,920 viral reels in Aubrium's library, from 181,983 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers. Each reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. "Small" here means under 10,000 followers, and the library holds no one under 1,000. Every reel here already went viral, so none of this is the odds for a new one.

How many viral reels come from small accounts?

Close to half, at 44%.

That's 107,294 reels from 89,445 creators. 17,386 passed a million views and 1,427 passed ten million.

These are shares of the library, which only holds accounts with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, not of Instagram. They don't say how often a small account goes viral.

Do small accounts' viral reels look different?

Barely. Here are the 107,294 from accounts under 10,000 followers beside the 32,801 from accounts with 50,000 to 100,000.

Faces, text, sound and hooks sit within four points of each other. The one clear gap is tutorials: 27.5% of the bigger accounts' viral reels teach something, against 19.8% from small ones, who lean a little more on stories. That may come from which niches each group sits in, which these numbers don't split.

So there's no kind of reel here that only small accounts make. For what your next reel should look like, we'd look to your niche, not your follower count. What kind of reels go viral has a guide for niche after niche.

How many views does a small account's viral reel get?

Fewer than a bigger account's, and far more than its followers.

The middle viral reel, by account sizeViews, and views as a multiple of the account's followers. 243,920 viral reels in Aubrium's library, 22 October 2026. Every one already went viral.
Under 2KViews: 131KTimes followers: 90.8×
2K–5KViews: 153KTimes followers: 47.8×
5K–10KViews: 174KTimes followers: 24.5×
10K–25KViews: 253KTimes followers: 16.0×
25K–50KViews: 404KTimes followers: 11.4×
50K–100KViews: 642KTimes followers: 9.2×

From the smallest accounts to the biggest, the middle reel's views rise nearly fivefold, from 130,939 to 642,161. Against followers it runs the other way, from 91 times to 9.

Both gaps are partly how we count, not the reels. To count as viral, a reel needs at least 10,000 views and twice its creator's followers. For an account with 1,000 followers, that's 10 times its following but only 10,000 views. For one with 50,000, it's twice its following but 100,000 views. So small accounts' multiples start high, and so do bigger accounts' views. More on that in what a good views-to-followers ratio looks like.

What do small accounts' viral hooks look like?

Much like bigger accounts', going by the hook types in the table above. Here are eight from accounts under 5,000 followers, each the creator's most-viewed reel with an English hook.

Nothing in them says "small account". They'd read the same on an account ten times the size.

Questions people ask

How do you go viral on Instagram with a small account?

Aubrium's library shows no special trick. Viral reels from accounts under 10,000 followers look much like those from accounts with 50,000 to 100,000, in faces, text, sound and hooks. And Instagram says it shows every reel to people who don't follow you.1

What counts as a viral reel for a small account?

In Aubrium's library, a reel counts as viral when it reaches at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. For an account with 1,000 followers, that means 10,000 views. Past 5,000 followers, twice the following is the higher bar.

Why are my reels not going viral?

Aubrium's library can't tell you, because we only looked at reels that already went viral. Instagram says the reels that do best with their first small audience go on to wider groups, and that recommendations make reach harder to predict.1 And in an experiment with songs, hits were partly random.

What is a good views-to-followers ratio on Instagram?

Among viral reels in Aubrium's library, the middle one reached 21 times its creator's followers. For accounts under 10,000 followers it was 42 times, and from 50,000 to 100,000 it was 9 times. The 10,000-view bar for counting as viral pushes small accounts' multiples up. There's more in what a good views-to-followers ratio looks like.

How we did this

We looked at every viral reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 243,920 of them, from 181,983 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers. Each reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted reels only, since carousels and photos carry no view count.

"Small" means under 10,000 followers: 107,294 reels from 89,445 creators. "Bigger" means 50,000 to 100,000 followers: 32,801 reels. The library holds no one over 100,000, so this isn't a comparison with big creators. "Times followers" is a reel's views divided by its creator's followers, and the middle reel is the median. Faces, text, sound, format and hook type come from Aubrium's reader, the AI model that labels every post. A label is the reader's call, so some will be wrong.

The numbers can't tell you three things. They say nothing about accounts under 1,000 followers. We looked only at reels that went viral, so they show what those reels have, not what made them go. And none of it is the odds for a new reel.
