The best hook generators for Instagram reels in 2026

What hook generators do, what makes a hook worth filming, and which tool writes the best. Our team gave eight the same five viral reels and had every hook scored blind.

Aubrium ResearchEditorial · Updated

For the tinted sunscreen launch in our test, eight tools wrote opening lines. Three reviewers read them all blind, with no tool names. All three picked the same idea, from the same tool: "Five shades on one cheek, watch which one disappears."

It's easy to see why. It tells you exactly what's about to happen, and you want to watch it happen.

That's the job of a hook generator: to write lines like that for your reel, and enough of them that you can pick a good one. Most reel tools now offer one. Some write six hooks, some write fifty. In our test, the share you'd actually film ranged from about two in three to almost none.

This guide covers what hook generators do, what makes a hook worth filming, and how eight of them did when our team gave each one the same five viral reels and had every hook scored blind.

The short answer

Aubrium is the best hook generator for most Instagram creators. Its hooks scored highest in our blind test, 4.2 out of 5, and won "best hook of the reel" 8 times out of 15. It writes from reels that took off for accounts your size. CreatorHouse came very close, and more of its hooks were usable: 68%, to Aubrium's 53%.

What does a hook generator do?

A hook is the first line of your reel: the words you say, or put on screen, while people decide whether to keep watching. A hook generator writes a list of them for you to pick from.

Most start from one of two places: a reel you liked, or a topic you type. The better ones read the reel first, so the hooks fit what you'll actually show. Weaker ones write for the topic in general, and some don't read the reel at all.

A few go one step further and show you the hooks that already worked. Aubrium labels the hook type on every post in its library, so you can see which openings took off in your niche before you write yours.

What makes a hook worth filming?

Our reviewers used one main test: would it stop you scrolling? They judged each tool's opening line and its best three hooks. Quantity didn't count, so fifty bland hooks scored below five great ones.

They also counted how many of each tool's hooks they'd actually film for that reel. We call those usable. Hooks written for a different topic almost never made the cut.

That gives you a simple checklist for any tool you try:

What a good hook generator gets right

  • Yes: It reads your reel or topic before it writes
  • Yes: Most of its hooks fit this reel, not any reel
  • Yes: Its hooks don't promise facts the reel can't show
  • Yes: It gives you real choices, not fifty versions of one line
  • Yes: It sounds like a person talking, not an ad
  • Yes: It shows you which hooks already worked for accounts your size

How we tested them

We didn't stop at each tool's website. Our team studied each app hands-on in October 2026, the way a creator would use it.

Every tool that writes got the same five viral reels: a face-wash ranking, a tinted sunscreen launch, a pilates class in a parking lot, a run of baking fails and a coffee cart's first quote. Each tool got the reel's link, or its topic where it couldn't read a link. Where a tool writes more hooks only when you ask, we asked its chat for them.

Then AI reviewers scored everything blind. These are AI models, software that reads text and gives it a score. Tool names were removed and the order was shuffled. Each tool's hooks got a score from 1 to 5 for whether they'd stop the scroll. Each reviewer also counted the hooks they'd film for that reel. That count, divided by all the hooks the tool wrote, is its usable share.

Three reviewers scored all eight tools, and three more had scored seven of them in an earlier round. Every reviewer also picked the single best hook of each reel, out of all the tools' hooks.

The 8 hook generators at a glance

They're ranked on the reviewers' hook score, then on the usable share. Both come from the second round: three reviewers, five reels.

Two tools you may know aren't ranked. ViralFindr has no writer. Metricool is a scheduler with an AI assistant for posts, but writing from a reel isn't on its site, so it wasn't in the test.9

The 8 hook generators, one by one

1. Aubrium

Library + writerFrom $49/mo

Best for: Hooks built on reels that took off for accounts your size

Aubrium's hooks start from a reel that already worked. Its library holds more than 260,000 Instagram reels and posts that reached far more people than their creators have followers, all from accounts with 1,000 to 100,000 followers. Every post shows its hook and its hook type, so you can see which openings took off in your niche.

Press Make my version on a reel, or paste a link or an idea into Create, and you get your own hooks with a script and a caption. In our test it wrote 23 hooks a reel, and the reviewers would film about half of them. Its hooks scored highest, and they won "best hook of the reel" more often than any other tool's: 8 times out of 15.

2. CreatorHouse

Watchlist + script chatFrom $39/mo

Best for: Punchy hooks on accounts you already follow

CreatorHouse watches accounts you type in, transcribes their videos and pulls out each one's opening line. It doesn't sort hooks into types. Its chat writes a script from any video and gives you more hooks when you ask; we asked for ten a reel.

Its hooks were our closest rival. They scored 4.1 out of 5 in the second round, and came top in the first. About two in three were usable, the best hit rate of any tool. For the pilates reel, two of three reviewers picked its "Locked door. Eight mats. Zero instructor. Here's what we did." The catch: some hooks carried details the reel didn't have, like nine new sunscreen shades where the reel launched fifteen.

3. Virlo

AI chat + research agentsFrom $49/mo

Best for: A few careful hooks, each with text for the screen

Virlo's assistant, Vee, writes hooks in a chat, each with a line of text for the screen, alongside scripts and captions. It covers TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

Its hooks were careful and natural, and 62% were usable. But it wrote only about six a reel, and none at all for the pilates reel. It can't read a reel by link unless the reel is already in its library, so it wrote for three of our five from the topic alone. One reviewer picked its face-wash opener as the best of that reel: "The cheapest face wash here is not the worst one, and I was honestly offended."

4. Octupie

Account search + AI strategistFrom $29/mo

Best for: A long list, if you don't mind sorting

Octupie's Studio writes hooks in long, grouped lists, alongside captions and scripts. It picks accounts in your niche for you, so there's little to set up.

Quantity is its strength and its problem. It wrote about 43 hooks a reel. Only about a third were usable, but that still came to about 14, the most of any tool. You have to dig for them, though: the lists came with the assistant's own chat left in, and one reviewer called a list "a 50-line dump". One reviewer picked its baking opener as the best of that reel: "Only bakers know the pain of a cake rising beautifully, then collapsing like it paid rent."

5. ViralSpot

AI agent + watchlistFrom $25/mo

Best for: Hooks in a natural, spoken voice

ViralSpot's AI agent writes hooks as part of a full reel breakdown. Paste a link and it returns the breakdown, ten or more hooks, a timed script and a caption. Its hooks read the most like a real person talking, and it leaves a blank wherever a number would go.

Only about a third were usable, though. When we told it the creator's niche, it moved three of the five reels into that niche, and the hooks moved with them. On the face-wash ranking it shone: two of three reviewers picked its "Rating the face washes I actually own, and one of them is going in the trash."

6. Sandcastles

Watchlist + global searchFrom $49/mo

Best for: Six quick options before a script

Sandcastles gives you six hooks to pick from before it writes a script. In our test, five of the six were the same stock templates on every reel, with openers like "I seriously think…" and "Okay I haven't seen anybody talk about this…". The sixth was the source reel's own first line.

That makes them quick to choose from, but hard to tell apart. About 44% were usable, and none was picked as the best hook of a reel. It covers Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts, and each video breakdown costs a credit.

7. Viral Outliers

Text search, three platformsFrom $17/mo

Best for: One opening line inside a full script

Viral Outliers doesn't write a list of hooks. Its Content Remix writes one script from a post's link, with a caption and a checklist of what to film, and the script's first line is your hook.

The reviewers scored that one line 2.9 out of 5. Its scripts kept the source's format but changed its facts: one put a made-up launch on e.l.f., with the line "Elf just dropped not 10 or 12, but 15 new shades". It covers Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, with an API.

8. Runwave AI

Live pulls + script studioFrom $19/mo

Best for: Testing two hooks inside a script editor

Runwave writes 12 hooks from a reel's breakdown, and its Script Studio lets you try two hooks side by side. It says it's built for creators who post about AI tools.

In our test, its hook writer wasn't told what the reel was about. A face-wash ranking got "What if everything you know about side hustles is wrong?", and a pilates story got hooks about confidence. On average, fewer than one of its 12 hooks a reel was usable: 3%, the lowest here.

How many of the hooks could you use?

Two numbers matter here, and they pull in opposite directions. A high share means less sorting. A high count means more to choose from.

CreatorHouse had the best share: about two in three of its hooks were worth filming. Octupie had the most usable hooks in total, but they were buried in lists of about 43. Aubrium sat between the two, with about 12 usable hooks a reel, at 53%.

Whose hook won each reel?

Each reviewer picked the single best hook of each reel, out of every tool's. That's 15 picks a round.

That's 8 of 15 picks for Aubrium in the second round, to CreatorHouse's 3. In the first round it was 7 to 6. Aubrium had the most picks both times.

Where did hooks go wrong?

Every tool missed somewhere, Aubrium included:

Where hooks went wrong in our test

  • No: Runwave AI: hooks about side hustles for a face-wash ranking, because its hook writer wasn't told about the reel
  • No: Sandcastles: the same five stock openers on every reel
  • No: Octupie: good lines buried in long lists, with the assistant's chat left in
  • No: ViralSpot and Virlo: hooks moved into beauty when told the creator posts about beauty
  • No: CreatorHouse: nine new sunscreen shades, where the reel launched fifteen
  • No: Aubrium: a few hooks made claims the reel didn't back up, like a shade that "oxidises two levels darker by lunchtime"
  • Yes: What won: lines built on the reel's own moment, like five shades on one cheek or a locked studio door

Aubrium's hooks also leaned on a few patterns, like "POV:" and "Warning:". And its winning coffee-cart hooks told the original creator's story, so you'd need to swap in your own before you film one.

Questions people ask

What's the best hook generator for Instagram reels?

For most Instagram creators, Aubrium. Its hooks scored highest in our blind test, 4.2 out of 5, and won the best hook of the reel 8 times out of 15. CreatorHouse was close, with a better hit rate.

What makes a good reel hook?

One that would stop you scrolling, fits this reel and is true. Most of the hooks our reviewers picked as best were built on the reel's own moment, like "Five shades on one cheek, watch which one disappears." None of the stock templates won.

How many hooks should a generator give you?

Enough to choose from, and few enough to read. In our test, more hooks didn't mean better ones. Octupie wrote about 43 a reel and a third were usable. CreatorHouse wrote 10, and about two in three were.

Are AI-written hooks safe to use?

Read them first. Some tools' hooks carried claims the reel never made, like a wrong shade count. If a hook states a fact, check it before you say it on camera.

What does "usable" mean in this test?

A hook counted as usable when a reviewer said they'd actually film it for that reel. The usable share is those hooks divided by all the hooks the tool wrote.

Were the reviewers people?

No. They were AI models, given one scorecard, with the tool names removed and the order shuffled, in two rounds of three. They can't favour a name they can't see, but they aren't your audience either. Treat the scores as a guide, not a verdict.

Each of these takes one part of this page further:

How we did this

Our team studied each app hands-on in October 2026, using it the way a creator would. Every tool that writes got the same five viral reels, by link where it could read one and by topic where it couldn't. We kept every hook as written. Where a tool writes more hooks only when you ask, we asked; where a plan capped a step, we used what it allowed and counted only what it produced.

The hooks were scored blind by AI reviewers, with one scorecard and no tool names, in two rounds of three. The first round had seven tools; Viral Outliers joined in the second. Six of the tools were told the creator's niche, beauty and lifestyle. Aubrium and CreatorHouse weren't told anything about the creator. Five reels is a small sample, and tools change, Aubrium included: these are the hooks each one wrote in October 2026.

Prices are from each tool's own pricing page, read on 22 October 2026. Aubrium's library numbers come from its own database, read on 23 October 2026. If something here is out of date, tell us and we'll fix it and move the date. And yes, Aubrium makes this page.
