The best hooks for ceramics reels, from 500+ that went viral
We read the opening line of every viral ceramics reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 15 real ones to learn from.

"Omg who's teeth are those?" Five words on a pottery reel, and it drew 26.5 million views. The maker who posted it had 6,093 followers. It's a question nobody expects from clay, which is rather the point.
Ceramics hooks are an odd bunch. Some are jokes, some are glaze notes, some are kiln confessions, and 33% of these reels have no real hook at all. We went through the openings of 500+ viral ceramics reels in Aubrium's library, from 400+ potters, to sort out which kinds turn up and how far each one got. If you want the rules that hold everywhere, the best hooks for Instagram reels is the cross-niche guide. Other crafts and trades are in what goes viral in each niche.
On viral ceramics reels, a curiosity gap opens 25% of them, more than any other kind of hook. Relatable lines and number lists got furthest, 21× and 20× their account's followers, though number lists are rare. 33% have no hook of any type. Text on screen carries the hook in 55%, and a typical one runs 10 words.

What kind of hook works best for ceramics reels?
Curiosity gaps. A quarter of these reels, 25%, open on one. Callouts come next at 8%, then relatable lines and bold claims at 7% each.
Read across to the far column and the order flips. Relatable lines, just 7% of reels, pulled 21× their follower count at the middle. Number lists hit 20×, but only 13 reels use one, so hold that loosely. The curiosity gaps, for all their numbers, sat at 12×. And the 33% with no hook of any type? Their middle reel hit 41×.

How long should a ceramics hook be?
Shorter than you'd guess. Pottery hooks of 1 to 4 words travelled furthest, and not by a little.
Those tiny hooks are only 12% of the set, yet their middle reel pulled 32× its follower count. The 5 to 8 word band managed 13×, and none of the longer bands passed 12×. A typical ceramics hook is 10 words, and just 40% keep to 8 words or fewer. A glaze name and a question mark can be plenty.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Put it on screen. A silent line of text opens 46% of viral ceramics reels, more than a voice does, and it went furthest.
Silent text took the middle reel to 16× its follower count. A voice alone got 11×, and words said while they sit on screen got 10×. A voice alone opens 16% of these reels, and another 9% say the hook while it's on screen; two of the picks above are spoken, a raku pot glowing out of the kiln and a salt shaker explained in one breath.
How do viral ceramics hooks start?
"I" and "my" tie at the top, 13 hooks each. Potters write about their own pieces, their own glazes and their own studio. "How" and "if" come next.
