We read the opening line of every viral tattoo reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 15 real ones to learn from.
"You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth." Somebody said that out loud at the start of a tattoo reel, and it drew 31.3 million views. The artist behind it had 1,294 followers.
Tattoo hooks are a strange mix: client one-liners, price questions, first-tattoo nerves and the odd proverb. We read the opening lines of 700+ viral tattoo reels in Aubrium's library, from 600+ creators, and tallied the kinds and how far each went. Curiosity gaps and transformation teases open more viral tattoo reels than any other kind, 13% and 12%. Relatable lines and questions tied at 43 times their account's followers; only warnings, on 10 reels, went further. 39% have no hook of any type. 49% put the hook on screen, and the middle hook is 8 words.

What kind of hook works best for tattoo reels?
Curiosity gaps, just barely: 13% of these reels open on one, with transformation teases right behind at 12%. No single type opens more than 13%.
The far column tells a different story. Relatable lines and questions both reached 43 views for every follower on their middle reel, against 17 for curiosity gaps. Warnings sit at 278, but that's 10 reels, the tiger line above among them. And 39% of tattoo reels have no hook of any type; their middle one reached 19.

How long should a tattoo hook be?
Longer than you'd expect. Hooks of 13 to 20 words travelled furthest, though past 20 words they fell away.
The 13 to 20 word band is just 13% of the set, and its middle reel drew 34 views for every follower. At 5 to 8 words it was 25, and at 1 to 4 words, 19. Past 20 words it dropped to 11. The middle tattoo hook is 8 words, and 53% sit at 8 words or under. Two of the picks above are dialogue, set in quote marks.
Should you say the hook or show it?
On screen. Text with no voice opens 42% of viral tattoo reels, and it travelled furthest of the three.
The middle text-only reel drew 27 views for every follower, against 15 for text that's also read aloud and 13 for a voice alone. A voice alone still opens 11% of these reels, and another 7% say it while it's on screen; the tiger line is one of the spoken ones.
How do viral tattoo hooks start?
"I" opens 23 hooks; no other word opens more than 7. Artists talk about their own work, their clients and their day. "Tattoo", "my", "POV", "when" and "you" trail at 6 or 7 each.

We looked at every tattoo reel in Aubrium's library on 31 October 2026: 700+ reels from 600+ creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached far more people than its creator has followers. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's tattoo niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 210+ reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
