The best Instagram content research tools in 2026, tested
Content research tools find what's working on Instagram before you film. Eight compared, from viral reel libraries to rival dashboards, with our team's test numbers.

Take every viral reel in our library posted in the last 30 days. More than half came from accounts with fewer than 10,000 followers. Small accounts, with reels that travelled far past their following, on ideas you could make next week.
Those are the reels worth studying when you're deciding what to post. A reel from a famous account gets views because it's famous. A reel from an account your size that reached 50 times its following got there on the idea.
Finding them is the job of a content research tool. The trouble is that "content research" covers very different products. Some are libraries of viral posts. Some watch a list of rivals you give them. Some are analytics dashboards built for brands, with competitor reports on the side. They answer different questions, and the one you need depends on yours.
This guide compares eight of them. Our team tested three hands-on, next to our own, and read the other four from their own sites. We make one of the eight, Aubrium, so we show where every number comes from, including where we come up short.
For most Instagram creators, Aubrium is the best content research tool in 2026. It's a searchable library of viral reels from accounts with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, filtered by niche and country, and its scripts came first in our blind test. For competitor reports on brand accounts, pick Socialinsider or Metricool. If you post on TikTok and YouTube too, Viral Outliers or Virlo.
What is Instagram content research?
It's working out what to post by looking at what's already working for other people. Analytics tells you how your own posts did. Research looks at everyone else's.
Most tools do one or two of these three jobs:
Find what's working
Search posts by topic and pull out the ones that did far better than their account usually does. People call those outliers.
Watch competitors
Follow a list of accounts and see which of their posts took off, and how they compare with yours.
Spot trends
See which formats, sounds and topics are picking up across many accounts at once.
The first job, the one viral reel finders do, is where you get ideas you haven't seen yet. The second keeps you honest about the accounts you're up against. The third tells you what's moving this week. The best tool for you does the job you're missing.
What should you look for in one?
Here's the checklist we used. A tool can look great on its home page and fail every line of this once you search your own niche.
What a good content research tool gets right
- Yes: It shows posts from accounts your size, not mostly famous ones
- Yes: Its "viral" posts really did beat what their account usually gets
- Yes: Its search finds posts about what you typed
- Yes: It works without your Instagram password or a business account
- Yes: You can filter by country
- Yes: It helps you turn what you find into a post
How we tested them
Our team studied eight viral reel finders hands-on in October 2026, the way a creator would use them, next to Aubrium. Three of them are on this list: Viral Outliers, Virlo and Sandcastles. We ran more than 1,300 searches across the tools with a search box, with the same keywords in each, and saved every result: the account, its followers, the views, the tool's own score and the caption.3 We ran the same keywords on Aubrium's library.
For writing, every tool that writes got the same five viral reels. Three AI reviewers judged each version blind against the original reel, twice, in reversed order.4 The reviewers are software from three different companies that reads text and scores it.
We didn't test Socialinsider, Metricool, Iconosquare or Creadar hands-on for this guide. What we say about them comes from their own sites, read on 4 November 2026, and we say so beside each one.

The 8 tools, one by one
1. Aubrium
LibraryFrom $49/moBest for: Instagram creators deciding what to post
Aubrium is a library of Instagram reels and posts that reached far more people than their creator has followers. Every account in it has between 1,000 and 100,000 followers, so what you find is what worked for accounts like yours, not for celebrities.
There are more than 280,000 viral posts in it, from more than 200,000 creators, and new ones arrive every day. You filter by niche, country, format, account size, how viral, hook type, date, on camera or not, and AI-made or not. Each post shows its hook, its caption, its hashtags and its sound, and the full transcript when someone speaks.
Around the library sit the tools that turn research into posts. Research Any Topic finds viral reels for a topic you type. Analyse Competitors ranks a rival's posts against their own normal and keeps watching for 30 days. Make my version writes your own script, 20 hooks and a caption from any reel. It also works inside ChatGPT and Claude.

2. Viral Outliers
Text search, three platformsFrom $17/moBest for: Research across three platforms, with an API
Viral Outliers searches posts across TikTok, YouTube and Instagram and scores each one against its account's usual views. Its API is a real plus if you build your own tools, and its script writer came a close second in our blind test.
Its search matches any text that contains your letters, so "cat" matched "education". Its default results lean heavily towards big accounts: the typical one in our searches had 212,433 followers. Filtered to Instagram accounts under 100,000, 45% of its top results did worse than their creator's usual.
- Pricing
- $17, $37 or $149 a month5

3. Virlo
AI search + research agentsFrom $49/moBest for: Teams who want trend alerts on three platforms
Virlo is built for teams. You chat with its assistant, set up research agents that collect videos on a topic, and get alerts when something takes off on TikTok, Instagram or YouTube.
Its Instagram coverage was its weak side in our test. Its search matches an AI summary of each video rather than the words in it, so half the results didn't contain the keyword. And 87% of the Instagram reels its beauty agent collected had fewer views than the account has followers.
- Pricing
- $49 or $199 a month. Enterprise from $499.6
- Trial
- 7 days; no refunds after the trial ends
- Platforms
- TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts
- Agents that keep searching after you close the tab
- Built for teams
- Half of search results missed the keyword
- Most collected Instagram reels hadn't beaten their followers
4. Sandcastles
Watchlist + global searchFrom $49/moBest for: Tracking a list of channels on three platforms
Sandcastles covers Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts in one place. You build a watchlist of channels, and on Pro and up you can search across everything its users have added.
Its search results lean towards big accounts: the typical one in our test had 125,849 followers, and 24% of top results were posted before 2024. Its scripts turned the reels into long talking essays, with no captions, and placed seventh of nine tools in our blind test.
- Pricing
- $49, $99 or $499 a month. New accounts start on a $5 Starter.7
- Trial
- No free plan. No refunds from Pro up.
- Platforms
- Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts
- Three platforms in one place
- Good write-ups of a single video
- Mostly big and older reels
- No size or country filter on videos
5. Creadar
Rival trackerFrom €18/moBest for: Watching rivals you already know, cheaply
Creadar watches creators you add on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts, and flags any video that reaches three times the median of that creator's last 20. Its data refreshes once a day. The rule is clear and the price is low.
It won't find accounts for you, though. Its own blog says it has "No keyword search and no account discovery", and its creator suggestions are listed as coming soon. Its entry plan watches 10 creators. We didn't test it hands-on; this comes from its own site.
- Pricing
- €18, €35 or €95 a month; Starter is €180 a year8
- Trial
- A one-time preview of 3 accounts, no card, per its blog8
- Platforms
- Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts
- A clear outlier rule
- A low entry price
- No search and no account discovery
- 10 creators on the entry plan
6. Socialinsider
Analytics and benchmarksFrom $99/moBest for: Agencies benchmarking brand accounts
Socialinsider is an analytics tool for social media teams. You add your accounts and your competitors', and it compares them side by side: engagement rate, reach, Reels views and posting habits, across six networks, with automated reports.
It shows the accounts you add, not posts from accounts you don't know. Its entry plan's 20 accounts are shared between yours and your competitors', and its own help pages mark competitors' Instagram reach and views as estimates. We didn't test it hands-on; this comes from its own site.
- Pricing
- $99, $149 or $239 a month; Adapt is $82 a month billed yearly9
- Trial
- 14 days, no card
- Platforms
- Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube
- Side-by-side competitor benchmarks
- Reports for clients
- Doesn't find posts from accounts you haven't added
- Competitors' views and reach are estimates
7. Metricool
Scheduler + analyticsFreeBest for: Scheduling, with a look at competitors
Metricool is a scheduler first, and a good one, with analytics and a competitor view. Its free plan analyses 5 competitor profiles, and Starter up to 100 per network, with their posts sorted by whatever metric you pick.
For Instagram, you can only add professional accounts as competitors, and your own account has to be linked through Facebook. It shows the accounts you add; it doesn't find reels from accounts you don't. We didn't test it hands-on; this comes from its own site.
- Pricing
- A free plan; Starter from $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly, before VAT10
- Trial
- Free plan, no card
- Platforms
- Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and more
- A real free plan
- Scheduling and reports in one place
- Competitors must be professional accounts
- Not a reel finder
8. Iconosquare
Analytics and reportsFrom €9/moBest for: Brand reports across networks
Iconosquare calls itself an analytics-first social media manager: reports, scheduling and listening across eight networks. Competitor tracking comes on its Scale plan, along with the top 10 posts on any hashtag you track.
Both your account and your competitors' must be Instagram business profiles. Its competitor numbers run from posts published to average likes, average comments and most engaging posts; views and plays aren't on the list. We didn't test it hands-on; this comes from its own site.
- Pricing
- From €9 a month billed yearly; competitors on Scale, €69 a month billed yearly. Prices vary by region.11
- Trial
- 14 days, no card; a free plan for 2 profiles
- Platforms
- Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and four more
- Strong reports
- A scheduler included
- Competitors only on the Scale plan
- Business profiles only, and no views listed
The numbers behind the ranking
These come from our team's hands-on study in October 2026. They cover the tools that search for posts. The analytics tools don't, so they aren't in these tables.
Whose posts do they show you?
We searched the same keywords in each tool and looked at the accounts behind the top results.
| Tool | The accounts in its results |
|---|---|
| Aubrium | Typical account: 5,607 followers. None over 100,000 |
| Sandcastles | Typical account: 125,849 followers. 58% over 100,000 |
| Viral Outliers | Default view, typical account: 212,433 followers. 69% over 100,000 |
"Typical" here is the median, the account in the middle of the list.
Did the viral posts really beat their account?
What we found when we checked the numbers
- No: Viral Outliers: filtered to Instagram accounts under 100,000, 45% of results did worse than their creator's usual
- No: Virlo: 87% of the Instagram reels its beauty agent collected had fewer views than the account has followers
- No: Sandcastles: 7% of its outlier scores were broken, with the score equal to the view count
- Yes: Aubrium: every post reached far more people than its creator has followers
Does the search find what you typed?
| Tool | What its search really matches | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Aubrium | Captions, transcripts and posts filed by topic | Results on the topic you picked |
| Virlo | An AI summary of each video | Half the results didn't have the keyword |
| Viral Outliers | Any text containing your letters | "Cat" matched "education" |
Country matters too. Aubrium knows the creator's country for 96% of its posts, across more than 200 countries, and lets you filter by it. Sandcastles has no country filter, and Viral Outliers showed no country at all.
Whose scripts are best?
Every tool that writes got the same five reels, and three AI reviewers scored the results blind against the originals.
Aubrium came first of 11 entries, with an average place of 1.47, and placed in the top three in all 30 judgings. Viral Outliers was a close second and won one of the five reels outright. Aubrium didn't win everything: its lines sounded less human than Virlo's, 4.1 out of 5 against 4.3.
Research tools vs analytics tools
Analytics dashboards are built to report on accounts you already know. That's a real job, and Socialinsider, Metricool and Iconosquare all do it well. But if you reach for one to decide what to post next, three things get in the way.
You pick every account
None of them finds posts from accounts you haven't added. The nearest they get is hashtags: Iconosquare shows the top 10 posts on a hashtag you track, on its top plan, and Metricool sells an Instagram hashtag tracker by the day.
They often need a business account
Metricool only adds professional accounts as competitors, and your own must be linked through Facebook. Iconosquare needs both to be business profiles. Socialinsider needs your account linked to a Facebook Business page.
They show account numbers, not breakouts
Engagement rate, average likes, follower growth. A reel that tripled its account's usual views looks like any other row until you work it out yourself.
None of that is a flaw. They're reporting tools. A research tool starts from the other end: the posts that already broke out, from accounts you've never heard of, ready to learn from.
Which one is right for you?

Questions people ask
What is the best Instagram content research tool?
For most Instagram creators, Aubrium. It's a library of viral reels from accounts with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, filtered by niche and country, and its scripts came first in our blind test.
What's the difference between content research and analytics?
Analytics measures your own posts: reach, views, followers. Content research looks at other people's posts to find what's working before you make yours.
Which tool shows competitors' Instagram reels?
Aubrium, Sandcastles, Creadar and Virlo all track accounts you add and flag their reels that beat the account's usual. Metricool, Socialinsider and Iconosquare compare competitors' accounts side by side in a dashboard.
Can I research TikTok and Instagram in one tool?
Yes. Viral Outliers, Virlo and Sandcastles cover TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Aubrium is Instagram only for now.
Do content research tools show hashtags?
Some do. Aubrium shows each viral post's hashtags beside its hook and sound. Iconosquare shows the top 10 posts on a hashtag you track, on its Scale plan, and Metricool sells an Instagram hashtag tracker by the day.
Do I need to connect my Instagram account?
Not for Aubrium: it reads public posts and never asks for your password. Analytics dashboards usually do: Metricool needs your Instagram linked through Facebook, and Iconosquare needs a business profile.
Is there an Instagram content research tool with a free plan?
Metricool has a free plan with 5 competitor profiles, and Iconosquare has one for 2 of your own profiles, without competitor tracking. Aubrium has no free plan or trial, but you can sign up with no card and see your niche's viral reels before you pick a plan.
How we did this
Our team studied eight viral reel finders hands-on in October 2026, next to Aubrium, using each the way a creator would. Viral Outliers, Virlo and Sandcastles are three of them. We ran more than 1,300 searches across the tools that have one, with the same keyword list in each, and saved every result. The five script reels were the same for every tool, judged blind by three AI reviewers from three companies. Socialinsider, Metricool, Iconosquare and Creadar weren't tested hands-on: what we say about them comes from their own sites.
Prices are from each tool's own site, read on 4 November 2026. Aubrium's library numbers come from its own database, read on 4 November 2026. Apps change; if something here is out of date, tell us and we'll fix it and move the date. And yes, Aubrium makes this page.
