The best AI tools for Instagram reel ideas (2026)
Some AI tools find you a reel idea, some write the script, and some only edit the video. Which does which, how the writers did in our blind test, and what each costs.

Among the viral reels in our library, the middle skit reached 40.8 times its creator's followers. The middle talking-head video, one person speaking to camera, reached 10.8 times.
Ask an AI tool for reel ideas and it won't know that. It will give you a list in seconds, and some of it will be good. But an idea from a blank page hasn't been tried on anyone yet. It's a guess that sounds sure of itself.
So this guide sorts AI tools by the job they really do. Some find you an idea that already worked. Some write the words. Some only edit the video. We make one of these tools, Aubrium, so we've shown where every number comes from, and where ours fell short.
The best AI tools for reel ideas start from reels that already worked. Aubrium came first of nine AI script writers in our blind test, with Viral Outliers a close second. ChatGPT is a fast way to brainstorm, with a free plan, and Instagram's Edits app suggests ideas inside Instagram itself. CapCut, Canva, OpusClip and InVideo are editors: they make the video once you have the idea.
What kind of AI tool do you need for reel ideas?
It depends on which part you're stuck on. A reel goes through three steps before you post it, and most AI tools only help with one.
Find the idea
A research tool shows you reels that already took off, so you start from something that worked. Aubrium, Viral Outliers and Virlo do this.
Write it
A writer turns the idea into a script, hooks and a caption. ChatGPT writes from whatever you tell it. Aubrium and Viral Outliers write from a real reel.
Make the video
An editor cuts, captions and polishes the clip. CapCut, Canva, OpusClip and InVideo live here.
Lists of AI tools for reels don't always split them this way. One list of the best AI tools for Instagram Reels names CapCut, OpusClip, Canva, Adobe Express, Descript, Munch and Vidyo.ai, all video tools, and suggests ChatGPT for hook variations.13 Those are good tools. They just won't tell you what to make.

How did the AI script writers do in our blind test?
Aubrium came first, and Viral Outliers was a close second. After those two came a big gap.
Our team studied nine apps that write reel scripts hands-on in October 2026. Each one got the same five viral reels: a face-wash ranking, a tinted sunscreen launch, a pilates class in a parking lot, a run of baking fails and a coffee cart's first quote. Then three AI reviewers judged every version against the original reel, without knowing which tool wrote it. The full method is in the blind test itself.
| Place | Writer | Average place (of 11) | First in (of 30) | Total /35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aubrium | 1.47 | 18 | 32.1 |
| 2 | Viral Outliers | 2.20 | 11 | 31.8 |
| 3 | CreatorHouse | 3.60 | 0 | 27.9 |
| 4 | ViralSpot | 4.27 | 1 | 26.0 |
| 6 | Virlo | 7.40 | 0 | 22.6 |
| 8 | Spyglass | 7.83 | 0 | 21.9 |
| 9 | Sandcastles | 8.13 | 0 | 17.9 |
| 10 | Runwave AI | 8.93 | 0 | 15.2 |
| 11 | Octupie | 9.73 | 0 | 17.5 |
There were 11 entries, not nine, because we also hid two of Aubrium's earlier writers among them, unnamed. They placed fifth and seventh. Lower average place is better.
What decided the order was simple. The versions that kept the reel's idea and its kind of video ranked high. The ones that drifted ranked low, however nice the writing. Virlo wrote from each reel's title or topic, and turned the baking fails into a beauty-hack review. Its average place on that reel was 9.2 out of 11.
Our team's blind test of nine reel script writers, October 2026. Three AI reviewers, five reels, each reel judged twice in reversed order.
The last two numbers matter if you care about making the reel your own. Viral Outliers kept every reel's idea, but 17.1% of its four-word phrases were the original's own words. Aubrium kept the idea and moved it into a new setting: the pilates class became a barre class in an apartment courtyard.
We didn't test ChatGPT, Predis.ai or Edits in that study. They aren't built to turn a reel into a script, so they weren't part of it. For writers ranked on their scripts alone, see the best AI script writers for reels.
Why start from a reel that already worked?
Because the idea is the part an AI can't check on its own. A writer can make any idea sound good. Only real views tell you whether people wanted it.
Take the kind of video. In our library of viral reels, some formats travelled much further than others for their creator's size. That's the kind of thing a reel idea should be built on.
Tutorials are the most common viral reels, at 23%. But the middle skit travelled more than twice as far for its creator's size. And one person talking to camera, the easiest reel to script, is the kind that travelled least far here.
The hook works the same way. Of the viral reels we've labelled, 19.6% had no hook line at all, and relatable openings travelled further than bold claims: 30.5 times the creator's followers against 16.4.
The best AI tools for reel ideas
These are the six tools that help with the idea itself, in the order we'd try them. Each card says what it's good at, where it falls short and what it costs.
1. Aubrium
Library of viral reels, with a writerFrom $49/moBest for: Instagram creators who want ideas that already worked for accounts their size
Aubrium is a library of Instagram reels and posts that reached far more people than their creator has followers, all from accounts with 1,000 to 100,000 followers. You pick your niche and filter by account size, country, format and hook type. Every reel shows its views, its hook and, where someone speaks, its words.
When a reel fits, Make my version turns it into your own script, with hooks and a caption. In our blind test it came first of nine writers, placed in the top three in all 30 judgings, and had the best caption score, 4.9 out of 5.
- Pricing
- $49, $99 or $249 a month. Every plan has every tool.1
- Cost of a script
- 4 Sparks for a reel to film, with 20 hooks1

- No free plan or trial. A first plan is refundable within 15 days.2
- Platforms
- Ideas from reels that already went viral
- Only accounts your size
- First in our blind test of nine writers
- Its lines sounded less human than some: 4.1 out of 5, to ViralSpot's 4.4
- Instagram only for now
- No free plan or trial
2. Viral Outliers
Outlier finder, with a remix toolFrom $17/moBest for: Remaking outliers from YouTube, TikTok and Instagram
Viral Outliers finds videos that beat their account's own average on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram Reels. Its remix tool turns one into a script, a caption and a filming checklist.
It was a close second in our blind test. It kept every reel's idea, the only tool to score 5 out of 5 on that, and its endings scored best. The catch is how much it kept: on the pilates reel, 38% of its four-word phrases were the original's own words.
- Pricing
- From $17 a month8
- Trial
- 7 days, with a card, charged on day 88
- Platforms
- YouTube, TikTok and Instagram
- Strong remakes that keep the reel's idea
- Three platforms in one place
- Copies more of the original's wording
- One opening line, no list of hooks
3. ChatGPT
General AI assistantFreeBest for: Brainstorming on any topic, any platform, fast
ChatGPT writes hooks, scripts and captions on request, and keeps rewriting as you push back. It works on any topic and any platform, and its free plan includes unlimited text chats.3
What it doesn't come with is a library of reels or their view counts. It writes from what you tell it, so whether an idea has worked before is yours to find out. How it compares with Aubrium is its own page.
- Platforms
- Any
- Fast and flexible, on a free plan
- Any topic, any platform
- Starts from a blank page, not a reel that worked
- Not part of our blind test
4. Edits
Instagram's video appFreeBest for: Ideas inside the app you edit in, if you're in the US
Edits is Instagram's own video editor. As you use it, it gives you an inspiration feed based on what you post and "weekly ideas generated just for you".6 Its Inspiration tab shows reels from public accounts that are trending on Instagram,16 and in the US its assistant answers questions like what's trending, with a daily limit.7
The ideas come from all of Instagram and from your own account. It doesn't show you what worked for accounts your size in your niche.
- Pricing
- Free in the App Store and Google Play7
- Platforms
- Made for Instagram
- Instagram's own trend data, in the editor
- Free
- The assistant is US only for now
- Not filtered by niche or account size
- We didn't test it for this guide
5. Virlo
Trend research with a chat assistantFrom $49/moBest for: Teams following trends on TikTok, Reels and Shorts
Virlo does research across TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, with research agents and a chat assistant that writes scripts. Its lines read naturally: 4.3 out of 5 for sounding human in our test, close to the best.
But its assistant hadn't read any of our five reels, so it wrote from each title or topic. That's how the baking fails became a beauty-hack review, and why it placed sixth.
- Pricing
- $49 a month after a 7-day free trial9
- Platforms
- TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts
- Natural-sounding scripts
- Three platforms
- Lost the reel's idea when it couldn't read the reel
6. Predis.ai
AI post and ad makerFrom $19/moBest for: Brands that want a finished reel or ad from one prompt
Predis.ai turns a prompt into a finished post. Type an idea, paste a product link or upload a photo, and it "writes the script, builds every scene, and adds a voiceover".15 Its plans also list post ideas and competitor analysis.
Its main pitch is ads: the home page calls it an AI ad generator. The idea still starts with you. It doesn't show you which reels took off.
- Pricing
- From $19 a month, billed yearly ($230)5
- Trial
- 3 days; it takes a card to start5
- Platforms
- Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and more
- A whole reel from one line
- Publishing built in
- Starts from your prompt, not reels that worked
- We didn't test it for this guide
What about CapCut, Canva, OpusClip and InVideo?
They're editors, and good ones, but they don't hand you an idea. Use them after you know what you're making.
| Tool | What its AI does | Gives you a reel idea? | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| CapCut | Edits your clips, with templates and AI tools for video, images and voice | No: No | Free plan. Pro has a 7-day free trial; its price shows in your local currency10 |
| Canva | Designs covers, carousels and video from templates; Magic Write turns a prompt into text | Partly: Only text you ask it for | Free plan. Pro has a free trial11 |
| OpusClip | Cuts a long video into short clips, with captions and B-roll | No: No | Free plan with 60 credits a month; from $15 a month12 |
| InVideo | Makes videos from a prompt, with a full editor | No: Not from real reels | From $20 a month, or $10 billed yearly14 |
If you film yourself, CapCut or Canva covers most of the editing. If you have long videos, like podcasts or streams, OpusClip finds the clips. If you don't want to film at all, InVideo or Predis.ai can make the video, but you'll still need an idea worth making.
How do you get a good reel idea out of an AI tool?
Give it a reel that worked, not a blank page. Then check what it hands back before you film.
Before you film an AI reel idea
- Yes: Start from a reel that took off for an account near your size
- Yes: Keep its idea and its kind of video
- Yes: Swap in your own story, products and details
- Yes: Check every number, price or "study" before you say it
- Yes: Pick the two or three hooks you'd really say out loud
- No: Copy the original creator's lines word for word
- No: Post the first idea a chat gives you without checking it ever worked
If you use ChatGPT, the same rule helps. Paste in a real reel's hook and the shape of the video, and ask for your version. That gives it something real to build on, instead of a guess. For finding that reel in the first place, see the best Instagram content research tools.

How we tested
The script results come from our team's hands-on blind test of nine reel script writers in October 2026. Every tool got the same five viral reels, and three AI reviewers judged each version blind against the original, twice per reel in reversed order. We wrote the scorecard, and Aubrium makes this page, so read the limits in the study too.
We didn't test ChatGPT, Edits, Predis.ai, CapCut, Canva, OpusClip or InVideo for this guide. What each one does, and its price, comes from its own site, read on 4 November 2026. Canva's pages only load in a browser, so its facts come from an archived copy of its Pro page: a dated snapshot kept by the Internet Archive. We haven't printed a price for Canva Pro or CapCut Pro, because their pages fill it in only in a browser, in your local currency.
The library numbers come from Aubrium's own database, read on 4 November 2026: the kind of video and the hook of every viral reel that carries a label, and how far the middle one travelled against its creator's followers. Every reel in the library already went viral, so none of these numbers is the chance that a new reel will. Apps change; if something here is out of date, tell us and we'll fix it and move the date. And yes, Aubrium makes this page.
