"This is everything I have. Is it enough to take him home?" That line is spoken, not typed, on a reel from an account with 41,814 followers, and the reel reached 4.2 million views. You hear what's at stake in the first breath.
That matters here, because in rescue reels a spoken hook went further than a typed one. We took the first line from all 795 viral animal rescue reels in Aubrium's library, posted by 628 creators. Curiosity gaps open 23% of viral animal rescue reels, the most of any kind, but relatable lines went further, a typical one drawing 36 times its account's followers. Spoken hooks went further than text, 38 times against 23. The middle hook is 10 words, and 21% have no hook of any type.

What kind of hook works best for animal rescue reels?
Curiosity gaps lead, at 23% of these reels, followed by relatable lines and transformation teases at 11% and 10%.
Among the common types, relatable lines are where the distance is. Their middle reel drew 36× its follower count, against 28× for a curiosity gap and 24× for a transformation tease, like "Today finally she is adopted look at her Smile ❤️🐶🥹". POV hooks went about as far, 35×, but there are only 18 of them. Bold claims and negative hooks trailed, at 15 and 16. And 21% have no hook of any type: their middle reel reached 45 times.

How long should an animal rescue hook be?
Not as short as you might think. The middle rescue hook is 10 words, and the longest ones went further than the shortest.
The shortest hooks trailed the long ones: 20× followers for 1–4 words and 24× for 5–8. Then 9–12 words jumped to 34×, and past 20 words it was 32×. The 13–20 band dipped to 17×, so it isn't a smooth line.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Say it. On viral rescue reels a spoken hook travelled further than a typed one.
Spoken-only hooks open 18% of these reels, with a middle reel at 38 times followers; another 4% say the hook and show it too. Text alone is far more common, at 58%, and reached 23. One of the spoken lines is simply "Oh. Oh, that's good."

We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's animal rescue niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 394 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
