We read the opening line of every viral dog reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.
No text on screen, just a voice: "I'm visiting you at the door. Who could it be?" That's how a reel from a 3,531-follower account opens, and it reached 15.1 million views.
In dog reels, a spoken hook travelled as far as a typed one, so we wanted to see what else sets these openers apart. Then we sorted every opening line from the 2,012 viral dog reels in Aubrium's library, 1,716 creators' worth. For hooks in every niche, see the reel hooks guide. Viral dog reels open most often on a relatable line (23%) or a curiosity gap (18%). Transformation teases (4%) reached 39× their follower count for the middle reel, just ahead of POV hooks at 36×. Spoken and on-screen hooks travelled equally far, and 24% of these reels have no hook of any type.

What kind of hook works best for dog reels?
Relatable lines, at 23% of these reels, then curiosity gaps at 18%. Neither pulls ahead on distance: 30 and 32 times followers.
Transformation teases are the ones to notice. Only 85 reels use one, the "My dog before his haircut" kind of opener, yet the middle one reached 39 times. POV hooks came close, at 36. Aspirational lines reached 45×, but there are only 12 of them. Number lists did least well, at 10. And 24% of viral dog reels have no hook of any type; their middle reel reached 45×.

How long should a dog hook be?
Any length went about as far: every band reached between 21× and 26×. The middle dog hook is 9 words.
50% of these hooks are 8 words or fewer. At 5–8 words the middle reel reached 26× followers, and past 20 words it was 23×, about as far. So write the line the joke needs, and stop there.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Either. In dog reels, a spoken hook and a typed one travelled the same distance.
Text alone opens 57% of viral dog reels, and its middle reel drew views worth 27 times the account's followers. Spoken-only hooks are rarer, at 15%, and also reached 27. The odd one out is doing both at once: 6% of reels, at 15 times followers. Pick one voice for the line, yours or the screen's.

We looked at every dog reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 2,012 reels from 1,716 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's dog niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 944 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
