The best hooks for prank reels, from 998 that went viral
We read the opening line of every viral prank reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.

"Show me your wallpaper." That's the whole hook, said out loud, on a reel from an account with 15,436 followers. It got 37.6 million views.
Prank reels live or die on the setup, so we read the first line of all 998 viral ones in Aubrium's library, from 856 creators. That covers pranks on partners, parents and friends, and the social experiments done on strangers. For what holds in every niche, start with the best hooks for Instagram reels. For what goes viral elsewhere, there's every niche we looked at.
The most common opening on viral prank reels is a curiosity gap: 32% use one, and the middle one reached 66 times its creator's followers. Questions come next at 15%. POV hooks are rare, at 4%, but travelled furthest of any type with enough reels to count, to 144 times followers. 60% put the hook on screen as text.

What kind of hook works best for prank reels?
Curiosity gaps lead at 32%, with questions at 15% and relatable lines at 10%.
That fits a niche built on a setup and a payoff. The hook tells you something is about to happen to somebody, and you stay to watch it land. 22% of viral prank reels have no real hook and drop you straight into the prank, and the middle one still reached 64 times its creator's followers. The line to look at is POV. Only 39 reels use it, but the middle one went 144 times past its followers, the furthest of any type with enough reels to count. Negative hooks show 196× in the chart, but that's 11 reels, too few to read much into.

How long should a prank hook be?
As long as the joke needs, and no longer. The middle prank hook is 8 words, and 51% run 8 or fewer.
The shortest ones, four words or fewer, travelled furthest in the chart: 84 times their creator's followers for the middle reel. After that the pattern breaks. Hooks of 5–8 words reached 47 times, while those past 20 words reached 51. So don't trim a prank hook for the sake of it. Cut it when the setup is clear.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it. 60% of viral prank reels put the hook on screen: 48% as text alone and 12% both said and shown.
Text alone travelled furthest: 66 times followers for the middle reel, against 50 for a hook that's only spoken. Hooks spoken alone still make up 26%. In the list above, those are short lines said straight to someone, like "Do you speak English?"
How do viral prank hooks start?
Four words share the top almost evenly: "what" with 20, then "how", "I" and "POV" with 19 each. Next comes "pranking", which names the joke before it starts, and "excuse" opens 15, more than "the" or "this".
