The best hooks for stand-up comedy reels, from 517 that went viral
We read the opening line of every viral stand-up comedy reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.

"Sir, you have mesmerized me all night. You in the green shirt. Who. Who are you?" The line talks straight to one person in the room. It opened a reel from an account with 3,241 followers, and the reel got 2.5 million views.
Stand-up is a spoken art, and you can see it in the hooks. We read the opening line of all 517 viral stand-up comedy reels in Aubrium's library, from 410 creators: crowd work, clips from sets, the bits that travel on their own. The hooks that work across Instagram are a good place to start, and the guide to every niche we read covers the rest.
Viral stand-up comedy reels split three ways: relatable lines, bold claims and curiosity gaps each open 24% of them. Relatable lines and questions travelled furthest, about as far as each other, at 26 and 25 times the creator's followers. 55% open on a hook spoken alone. The middle hook is 12 words.

What kind of hook works best for stand-up comedy reels?
It's a three-way tie. Relatable lines, bold claims and curiosity gaps each open 24% of viral stand-up reels.
Where they differ is distance. The middle relatable hook reached 26 times its creator's followers, and questions reached 25, about as far. Bold claims, just as common as relatable lines, reached 16. On these numbers, a line people see themselves in carried further than a big claim. And almost every reel has a hook: only 2% have no hook of any type.

How long should a stand-up comedy hook be?
About 12 words, the middle length, and only 36% run 8 or fewer.
55% of these reels open on a hook spoken alone, so a full sentence is normal. The very short ones, four words or fewer, travelled furthest at 39 times followers, but there are only 42 of them. From 5 words up, every length landed in the same narrow band, 18 to 20 times. Hooks past 20 words make up 20% here, and their middle reel reached 19.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Most just say it: 55% of viral stand-up reels open on a hook spoken alone, and another 21% say it and show it. But showing it alone travelled further.
The furthest went to reels that put a separate line on screen, like a title, rather than captioning what's said. Text alone reached 26 times the creator's followers for the middle reel. Spoken alone reached 20, and said and shown together reached 17. The joke still gets told on stage; the title is there for anyone scrolling with the sound off.
How do viral stand-up comedy hooks start?
"I", by a long way: 67 hooks start with it. Then "you" with 20, and "I'm" and "my" with 14 each. Stand-up starts with the comic.

How we did this
We looked at every stand-up comedy reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 517 reels from 410 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's stand-up comedy niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 442 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
