How to go viral in the stand-up comedy niche on Instagram
What 500+ viral stand-up comedy reels have in common: what they show, how they start, what they sound like, and who posts them. Real numbers from Aubrium's library.

A comic hands someone in the crowd control of a confetti cannon, with one instruction: "Set off the confetti when you think it's the right time." The caption says it went off mid-sentence, during a bit about his late mother. That clip reached 12.5 million views, posted to 98,346 followers.
Stand-up on Instagram is people talking, and the numbers say so. 92% of the 500+ viral stand-up comedy reels in Aubrium's library have someone talking to camera, and 97% are labelled funny. 150+ passed a million views. This page goes through what else they share, from the format to the sound. Our all-niche guide to viral reels has the wider picture, and what goes viral in each niche takes them one at a time.
Viral stand-up comedy reels are mostly people talking: 92% have someone talking to camera, and stories lead the formats at 36%. 98% show a face, 97% put text on screen, and 94% keep their own sound. All but 1% open on a hook. 31% come from accounts under 10,000 followers.

What kind of stand-up comedy reels go viral?
Stories lead at 36%, then talking heads at 27% and skits at 20%. Interviews make up 10%.
Interviews went further than the big three, 31 times their creator's followers for the middle one, against 25 for stories, 18 for skits and 16 for talking heads. Montages sit at 52, but only 11 reels are montages, too few to call. So a comic alone at the mic is common here, and it reached the least of the big formats.
Do you need to show your face?
Yes. 98% show a face, and only 2% show no person at all, too few to compare. Stand-up is a face and a voice, and 92% of these reels have someone talking to camera.
Should stand-up comedy reels have text on screen?
Almost all of them do: 97% carry text, and 83% keep it to a line or two. Those light ones went furthest, 21 times followers for the middle reel, against 16 with a lot of text. Only 3% have none, 14 reels in all.
Trending song or your own sound?
Their own sound, at 94%. Only 4% use a song, far under the library's 37%, and they're too few to compare. On a comedy clip the sound is the set itself: the line, the pause, the laugh.
What hooks work for stand-up comedy reels?
Relatable lines, on 25% of these reels, edge out bold claims and curiosity gaps at 23% each. All but 1% open on a hook of some kind. Questions, at 16%, put the middle reel at 27 times followers, and relatable lines at 25. "I" opens 67 English hooks, far more than any other word. The middle hook runs 12 words, and it can be just the first line of the bit, like "I went on a date today." Six that opened viral stand-up reels:

- CalloutText and spoken

Can a small stand-up comedy account go viral?
They can: 31% of these reels came from accounts under 10,000 followers. Under 2,000 followers, the middle reel reached 102 times its account's size, though that band holds just 27 reels. From 50,000 to 100,000 followers, it was 12.
