We read the opening line of every viral baby reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.
4.7 million views, from an account with 1,360 followers, on a reel whose whole hook was "The morning of her first birthday".
Baby reels travel a long way. The middle viral baby reel in Aubrium's library reached 34 times its creator's followers, and 248 of the 923 passed a million views. We read the hooks on every one, 923 reels from 761 creators, to see which opening lines keep coming back. A lot of the ones in this page's list count the baby's age in months, like "Pretty sure my 11 month old said her first phrase." This page hangs off the best Instagram reel hooks, across niches, and the full list of niches we looked at covers the rest.
On viral baby reels, curiosity gaps at 22% of reels and relatable lines at 20% are the hooks you'll see most. POV hooks went furthest of the common types, with the middle one at 49× its creator's followers; aspirational lines reached 100×, but there are only 7. 82% show the hook as text, and shorter hooks went further.

What kind of hook works best for baby reels?
POV hooks went furthest of the common types, and curiosity gaps are the ones you'll see most, on 206 of the 923 reels.
Relatable lines sit near the top on both counts: 181 reels, with a middle reel at 42× its creator's followers. They're the parent's-eye jokes, like baby-proofing the house and then feeling audited. POV hooks reached 49×. Aspirational lines reached 100×, but only 7 reels use one. Now look at the reels with no real hook, 16% of them. Their middle reel reached 63×, well above the 34× for the middle baby reel overall.

Short ones went further, though the middle hook still runs 10 words.
The 39 shortest hooks, 1–4 words, sit at 48× followers for the middle reel, and 5–8 words sit at 37×. Past 20 words, that fell to 15×. Only 39% of baby hooks are 8 words or fewer, so most parents write longer lines than the ones that travelled furthest. "POV: I BLINKED 🥺" is about as short as a hook gets.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it on screen. 69% of viral baby reels put the hook up as text alone.
Those travelled 37 times their creator's followers for the middle reel, against 30 for a hook that's only spoken. The odd one out is text and voice together, at 12. A line of text reads the same with the sound on or off.
How do viral baby hooks start?
Of the first words, "POV" is the most common, opening 31 hooks, and "this" comes next with 17. "My" and "baby" make the list too, at 13 and 9.

We looked at every baby reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 923 reels from 761 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's baby niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 402 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
