The best hooks for city break reels, from 981 that went viral
We read the opening line of every viral city break reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.

"it's just another statue in Prague", in quote marks, on screen. That was the whole hook on a reel from an account with 5,348 followers, and it reached 3.8 million views. It's a negative hook: it quotes someone who isn't impressed.
City breaks pile up in the same few places: Paris, London, New York and Prague all turn up in the picks below. We combed the opening lines of 981 viral city break reels in Aubrium's library, from 833 creators, for the ones that stood out. It's one city in our wider hooks guide, and our list of niches has the full spread.
Curiosity gaps open 24% of viral city break reels, more than any other hook, yet their middle reel reached only 10× followers. Relatable lines, negative hooks and POV hooks travelled about as far as each other, 20× to 22×, and ten transformation teases reached 34×. 87% show the hook as on-screen text, and the shorter the hook, the further it went.

What kind of hook works best for city break reels?
Curiosity gaps, at 24% of these reels, then callouts at 11% and questions at 10%. One phrase turns up again and again among the callouts: "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to…"
Here's the odd part. Curiosity gaps are the most common type, yet the middle one reached just 10 times its creator's followers. Relatable lines (22×), negative hooks (21×) and POV hooks (20×) all travelled further, about level with each other. Ten transformation teases top the chart at 34 times, but ten reels is too few to count on.
And 13% start without a hook of any type; their middle reel reached 19×.

How long should a city break hook be?
Short. In city break reels, every step up in length travelled less far than the one before.
The middle 1–4 word hook reached 19 times its creator's followers. Then it slides: 16 for 5–8 words, 13 for 9–12, 9 for 13–20, and just 6 past 20 words. 43% of the 425 English hooks fit in 8 words. "NYC rules no one tells you about 🗽" puts a city and a promise up front.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it: 64% of these reels use silent text, and just 7% rely on a voice alone.
Text alone travelled 17 times followers for the middle reel. Spoken hooks reached 13, and hooks that were said and shown at once only 8. Both "Ladies and gentlemen" openers we picked are said out loud. They're a format people know, but the numbers lean toward a line people can read.
How do viral city break hooks start?
Pointing and supposing: "this" opens 29 of the 425 English hooks and "if" 27, with "POV" third. "Ladies" starts 15, and you can guess how those go.

How we did this
We looked at every city break reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 981 reels from 833 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's city break niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 425 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
