The whole hook is two lines, with the answer left blank: them: "japan again?" me: It sat on a reel from an account with 8,229 followers and reached 3.9 million views.

Aubrium's library holds 1,425 viral destination guide reels from 1,149 creators, and this page is what their first lines have in common. It's the travel-guide entry in our series on reel hooks, and our list of every niche has the others.
30% of viral destination guide reels open on a curiosity gap; questions, bold claims and number lists share second place at 12%. The type that travelled furthest is a rare one, relatable lines (3%), with a middle reel at 31× its creator's followers. 92% put the hook on screen, and the middle hook is 11 words.

How long should a destination guide hook be?
No length clearly won. The middle hook is 11 words, and the middle reel ranged from 10 to 17 times its creator's followers across the lengths.
The middle 1–4 word hook reached 17 times, and the middle one past 20 words 15. In between, 5–8 and 9–12 words sat at 13 and 14, and 13–20 words at 10. Only 36% of the 674 English hooks stay within 8 words. A guide needs room for a place and a reason to stay, and that's fine.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it. 64% of these reels use text with no voice, and 28% use both.
A voice alone is rare, at 8%, and it travelled about as far as text on screen: 21 times followers against 19. The one that lagged is doing both at once, at 11. That combination is common here, on 28% of these reels, and it's the one to watch.
How do viral destination guide hooks start?
Conditions come first here: "if" opens 47 of the 674 English hooks, ahead of "this" and "the". An if-you hook picks out its viewer before the tip arrives.

How we did this
We looked at every destination guide reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 1,425 reels from 1,149 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's destination guide niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 674 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
