The best hooks for freelancing reels, from 765 that went viral

We read the opening line of every viral freelancing reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.

Aubrium ResearchEditorial · Updated

A reel got 1.8 million views on one line of text: "When you finish with a client and immediately update your policies because what was that???" Its creator had 4,815 followers.

Anyone who has sent an invoice can fill in the rest, because the line never says what the client did. We wanted to know how often hooks like that carry a freelancing reel. So we read the opening line on all 765 viral freelancing reels in Aubrium's library, from 639 creators. The wider picture is in our guide to Instagram hooks and what goes viral in each niche.

The short answer

On viral freelancing reels, the bold claim is the opener you'll meet most, then the curiosity gap and the question. The relatable line went furthest, with its middle reel at 25 times followers, against 10 for a bold claim. 78% show the hook as on-screen text, and half run 11 words or fewer.
