How long should a news and media hook be?
About 12 words: that's the middle hook. But length doesn't sort these reels neatly.
Hooks of 9 to 12 words travelled 24 times followers for the middle reel, while the bands on either side managed 13. Past 20 words, it was 15. Only 17 hooks run four words or fewer, so their 42 is too small a group to lean on.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it if you can. 64% of viral news and media reels show the hook on screen, and text alone travelled furthest.
Text on its own reached 25 times followers for the middle reel. Hooks said with no text on screen are common here, at 30%, in a niche where 91% of reels show a face, and another 19% say the hook and show it too. Spoken alone went 15. Text and voice together went 12.
How do viral news and media hooks start?
The top first word is "I", on 18 hooks, with "the" and "this" on 16 each. Presenters talking about their own day sit right next to headlines.

How we did this
We looked at every news and media reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 761 reels from 680 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's news and media niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 453 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
