How long should a running hook be?

A bit longer than you might guess. The middle running hook is 9 words, and the 5 to 8 word range went furthest.

1–4 wordsShare: 11%Travelled: 15×

9–12 wordsShare: 26%Travelled: 20×
13–20 wordsShare: 19%Travelled: 18×
21+ wordsShare: 12%Travelled: 13×

Only 43% of running hooks are 8 words or fewer, and the very shortest didn't do best: 1 to 4 words reached 15 times followers, against 25 for 5 to 8 and 20 for 9 to 12. Past 20 words it fell to 13. A runner's hook seems to want room for one detail, like a distance or a time, and not much more.

Should you say the hook or show it?

Show it. Running hooks typed on screen went much further than the ones spoken out loud.
