How long should a food business hook be?
Shorter than you'd think. The middle hook is 10 words, but the very short ones went furthest.
Hooks of one to four words are rare here, just 9% of the 784 we could read, yet theirs is the best multiple: 30× for the middle reel. Everything from 9 words up lands at 12× or 13×. Name the dish, the price or the problem, and stop.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it. Plenty of food business owners say their hook out loud, but text on screen went further.
24% of these reels lead with a spoken line and no text, which is a lot of hooks said out loud. Their middle reel reached 14× its following. Text alone reached 26×, the two together 16×. A written line can still be read with the sound off.
How do viral food business hooks start?
"POV" and "I" open the most hooks, 44 and 43, ahead of "this", "let's" and "how".

How we did this
We looked at every food business reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 1,857 reels from 1,600 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's food business niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 784 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
