We read the opening line of every viral optometry reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.
The hook is spoken, not written: "I've worked at care for five years and I think I have 10 pair of glasses." It's from an account with 1,405 followers, and the reel reached 3.8 million views.
Spoken hooks are the minority in optometry, and the middle one travels less far than text, which makes that reel stand out. We read all 691 viral optometry reels in Aubrium's library, from 508 creators, grouping their hooks by type and checking how far each type went. Curiosity gaps open 20% of viral optometry reels, more than any other hook, and the middle one reached 34 times its creator's followers, about level with negative hooks at 33, from only 12 reels. Questions come second at 18% but travelled 14 times. Text carries the hook on 68% of reels; the middle hook is 9 words.

What kind of hook works best for optometry reels?
Curiosity gaps lead, at 20%, and the most common hook here also travelled as far as any.
The middle curiosity gap reached 34 times its creator's followers. POV hooks and relatable lines weren't far behind, at 30 and 28 times. Questions are the odd one out: 18% of reels use one, but the middle question travelled only 14 times. Negative hooks reached 33 times, from just 12 reels. 13% have no real hook.

Fairly short: the middle hook is 9 words, and 43% are 8 or fewer. Only 13% go past 20.
Short ones went furthest. Hooks of 1–4 words and of 5–8 words both travelled 28 times their creator's followers, while at 13–20 words the middle reel reached 12. "POV: During Your Eye Test" is five words, and it reached 2.7 million views on an account with 1,688 followers.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it. 68% of viral optometry reels put the hook on screen; 57% show it without saying it.
Shown-not-said hooks travelled 27 times their creator's followers for the middle reel, against 13 for a spoken hook and 17 for one both shown and said. That makes the spoken hook at the top of this page an exception.

We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's optometry niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 312 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
