We read the opening line of every viral OOTD reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.

Four words, all lower case: "what to wear tomorrow". Posted to 1,378 followers, it reached 2.1 million views. It's barely a hook at all, which in this niche is close to the point.
OOTD reels are outfit of the day posts and fit checks, and 48% of the viral ones open with no real hook. We read the first line of the 1,671 viral OOTD reels in Aubrium's library, from 1,345 creators, and tallied which hook types appear and how far each one carried. Our pillar on reel hooks covers every niche at once, and so does what goes viral in every niche we read.
48% of viral OOTD reels open with no real hook. Where there is one, the top type is a relatable line, on 18% of all viral OOTD reels, then a callout, on 10%. Bold claims and aspirational lines are rare, at 2% and 4%, but reached 18 and 17 times their account's followers, near the top. The median hook is 7 words.

The headline is the hook nobody wrote. 48% of these reels open with no real hook, though many still show a word or two on screen, like a label. How long should an OOTD hook be?
There's no clean rule, but 7 words is the middle. 62% of OOTD hooks are 8 words or fewer.
Reach jumps around by length. Hooks of 9–12 words had the best typical reach, at 15 times followers, while 1–4 words reached 12 and 5–8 words 10. The 13–20 word band fell to 6. So write the line the outfit needs, and cut anything that reads like a caption.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it. 69% of viral OOTD reels put their opening line on screen as text alone, and very few say it.
Only 6% use a spoken hook and 3% say and show it together, so the comparison is thin. Text alone reached 13 times followers in the middle, spoken hooks 10, and the both-ways group 6. 65% of these reels run on a song, and a line of text sits over a song without fighting it.
How do viral OOTD hooks start?
"What" is the runaway first word: it opens 35 of the 438 English hooks, as in "what I wore". Then come "I", "the" and "POV". The outfit itself shows up too, with "fit" and "outfit" opening 9 each.

How we did this
