How long should a music production hook be?
Shorter, slightly. The middle hook is 9 words, and the very short ones went a little further than the long ones.
Hooks of 4 words or fewer reached 10 times their creator's followers for the middle reel, and anything past 12 words reached 7. The gap is small, so don't cut a useful word to hit a number. "Sidechain Explained 😂" is two words and an emoji, and that's all the setup it needed.
Should you say the hook or show it?
Show it, though the gap is small: text on screen alone reached 11 times the creator's following for the middle reel, a voice alone 9.
Saying it while showing it is common here, on 34% of the reels, and fits producers who talk you through a session. Those reached 8. A voice alone is on 14%.

How we did this
We looked at every music production reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 1,963 reels from 1,362 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's music production niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 949 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
