We read the opening line of every viral nursing reel in Aubrium's library: which hooks show up most, which travelled furthest, and 16 real ones to learn from.
Eight words, lower case, no punctuation: "when you get separated from your work bestie". It came from an account in the nursing niche with 1,996 followers, and it reached 2.8 million views.
Nurses write hooks for other nurses. The shift, the report, the patient who won't stop talking: if you've worked one, you get it in a second. We went through the hooks on all 2,049 viral nursing reels in Aubrium's library, from 1,319 creators, counting each kind and how far it went. Aubrium's reader marks 32% of these reels as funny, and it shows below. Nursing's favourite hook is the relatable line, on 24% of viral reels, and it also travelled furthest, to 25 times its creator's followers for the middle reel. Curiosity gaps and questions come next. 81% show the hook as text, and shorter hooks travelled further; the middle one is 12 words.

What kind of hook works best for nursing reels?
By a clear margin, relatable lines: 24% of viral nursing reels open on one, against 17% for curiosity gaps.
They also went furthest: the middle relatable reel reached 25 times its creator's followers. POV hooks and transformation teases tied next, at 21 times. Curiosity gaps are common but travelled 15 times, and questions 14. Just 6% of nursing reels have no real hook.

How long should a nursing hook be?
Only 30% are 8 words or fewer; the middle hook has twelve.
Here length and reach line up neatly: each step longer travelled less far. Hooks of 1–4 words reached 23 times their creator's followers, then 18, 16 and 14, and past 20 words just 11. The shift jokes still land short; they don't need the whole backstory.
Should you say the hook or show it?
On screen, mostly. 81% put the hook there, and 67% let the text carry it alone.
With the hook as text alone, the middle reel reached 23 times the creator's followers. Spoken, or spoken and shown, it was 10 and 11. 85% of these reels show a face, so the line often shares the screen with the nurse it's about.

We looked at every nursing reel in Aubrium's library on 22 October 2026: 2,049 reels from 1,319 creators with 1,000 to 100,000 followers, each of which reached at least twice its creator's follower count and at least 10,000 views. We counted every reel filed in Aubrium's nursing niche; a reel can sit in more than one niche.
Hook types, delivery and on-screen text are labels Aubrium's reader puts on every post. Hook length and first words count the 1,213 reels with an English hook in words. Every number here describes reels that already went viral, so none of it is the odds for a new one.
